Hi Irv,

I'm just in Pittsburgh PA, so DC is 4 hr drive.

I'd be happy to do a workshop down there if there were sufficient interest.

Hey Kip,

I took your suggestion and made a couple barbeque skewer tippers (10” in length); one with 14 the other with 21 skewers. I used three 7/8” (the hole is 4/8”) hard rubber ‘O’ rings for the first and 1" (hole 5/8”) for the second tipper.

The first ‘O’ ring is at the top, the second about an 1 ½” away and the third halfway down the tipper. The top two form a gripper for top-end stick playing. They look pretty good, almost like some of the finished hot rods I’ve seen on the net. Each width has a slightly different weight and sound as it hits the drum. Everything purchased at my local hardware store.

Also had some disposable (5) bamboo chopsticks (each a bit thicker than the skewers and their length is shorter at 8 ¾”). I used some black elastic hair bands (purchased in the hair dressing section at my supermarket), similar to a rubber band, to bind the chopsticks at the top and middle. Like the ‘O’ ring on the skewers, the second band can move up and down the shaft changing the rattle effect.

Thanks for the idea.

You've got to try Belgarth tippers - Eoin is a lovely guy and makes some of the best tippers I've ever tried.

And since we're shamelessly plugging web-sites you can check him out at www.belgarth.com

Try them!!

Im sorry to plug our website but we are just starting out and trying to publisise what we are doing. I agree there are plenty more good drum makers out there and its good for people to look around at every thing that is availible and of course peoples recommendations go a long way.

I just received one of my new tippers, the SWA model from Christian Hedwitschak of Art Bodhran (www.bodhranmaker.de/). Perfect timing since I received a Mike Quinlan bodhran (hstrial-mikequinlan.intuitwebsites.com/) just yesterday (see the photo). Awesome drum, awesome tipper.

The SWA is made of Snakewood, a beautiful dark reddish brown wood with striations. The stick is tapered from top to the bottom where it flares out in a little conical tip. It has a nice hand feel and plays great. I know it's said that the instrument doesn't make the musician but this tipper and the Quinlan drum have proven to bring more of that musician from within me.

I've got about four more tippers on order and will give you my take on them when received.

I have no affiliation with either of these makers but I do recommend them.
