Hey John, Here is a link to the write up on the original
Settles/Metloef Egg Drum {smeg?}
The shell was made by Davy Settles (Daveydrums) and the
Tuning & skin by Rob Forkner. It does sound amazing and is massive in a session.
Rob took my comments at the end of the article and made a surprise MKII drum which is the one I play now, it has the same amazing sound, less volume but with better quality tone control for me. I absolutely love it!!
We are discussing the design tweaks for the MKIII instrument at the minute but I don't think that I could ask for much more from a drum.
It is definitely an interesting instrument to play and has a number of different active areas / playing positions. I have one preferred position where it just sounds great to my ear and fits very well with my range of hand movements.
Paul Phillips didn't really get it to work for him but his left hand was very different from mine. Seamus O'Kane [in]famously said "it won't work, it defies the laws of physics"
From observation, experimentation and about 8 months of play, I'd say that the left hand is definitely the defining factor in in getting the richness in the egg sound - the technique works on all drums but it really brings out something special on the egg. At this point I do have to issue a disclaimer and say that your mileage may vary (YMMV), it is almost perfect for me, but I'm me and you are you.
I'll be happy to give anyone a go if I can arrange it, I live near Belfast. I'll also be in New York Next month for a gig and have a day free (9th iirc); I don't think that I'll be making the World Championships, But Rob from Metloef might be. After that I'll be at Milwaukee teaching the summer school class and I'm around for the festival weekend but don't expect coherence :)
