Still tracking a few of these down to see what they're like.

Hi Inspector G,

It's a fairly comprehensive mix alright, both of players and styles. A case of my cd collection morphing from just that, a collection into a 'reference library'!
I've lost count of the number of cd's of trad music & song we've got.

It expanded too when herself (singer)& meself (Bodhrán/song) moved in together. We're both collectors of songs so at the moment I'm databasing the lot from books, collections and cd's. Trying to ease the need to manually search through them all if looking for say 'songs of rebellion', but what began as a labour of love is now frustrating and tedious, oh wait, that's the very definition of love right!?!

It's great having it all on hand, the result of my 12 years or so of collecting plus the MP3 era has expanded it even more but sometimes you just wanna take out a CD and listen to it for enjoyment, haven't done a great deal of that lately!

Hope the list gave you some ideas for listening/collecting

Mike

Hello everyone!

A new member but I have been playing Bodhran for over a decade now. I also play Tenor Banjo, Mandolin, and an 8 string Guitar (altered 12 string).

Try this link to Amazon.com (USA) MP3 download store. Click on the arrow button to the left of number 3, the Boys of Ballsidare from the "Third Irish Folk Festival, volume 1" album.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=De+Danann&x=14&y=19

Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh in a prolonged bodhran solo with De Danann. The jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas during De Danann's prime years before Johnny left the group are also good examples of his style.

I would also recommend several tracks that can be found at Brenden White's bodhran website, especially "Old Hag at the Churn" by Damien Quinn with Calua.

Frank Torpey with Nomos, especially in their first album, is great. The last time I saw him, he was playing a 14 in deep and light shell drum - kind of a bendy drum that altered pitch easily.

Has anyone operating this website ever considered setting up an MP3 track download site where a collection of bodhran tracks can be sold? There are many tracks out there that are just not commercially accessible to buy otherwise. - M.

Hi Michael,

Welcome to bodojo.

Actually yes. Downloadable music is one of the planned functions for the store for 09. I had originally intended to make it available for members to make their own band's material available, but as long as the copyright & permissions are legitimate then I'd be delighted for bodojo to facilitate any music, DVD and book sale yes, although bodhran tutorials will be selected. Have you a catalogue of such music available or access to one? :)

We have restricted bandwidth capability for this with our current shared server but if there were enough download traffic to cover the costs, I could consider upgrading to allow for a full download site from a dedicated server. All is possible.

You're obviously an experienced player, I look forward to having another experienced participant to the virtual session table. We have a new pluckers arms forum if any stringpluckery, stringscratchery, puffwheezery or other rhythmo-melodite topics come up.

You may also find the banjo and bodhran section of the academy to be of interest, I'm interested in developing rhythmo-melodic (banjo mando-.. )& rhythmo-chordal (Guitar, Zook....) links as a study path for rhythmo-tonal bodhran patterns. It also helps us support the rhythm section and adds to our own general playing as well of course

Anyway I'm happy to facilitate legitimate downloads, I hadn't planned on doing it just yet but if there's interest, the service can certainly be made available pretty quickly.

Cheers & welcome

P

Here is an example of what Brenden White has done, although you can't actually download a selection or purchase the MP3 file:
http://www.bodhran.nl/site/index/insound

For example, "Hag at the Churn" performed by Calua with Damien Quin on bodhran. Very few people outside of Ireland / Europe know of Calua or Damien, but this track as an MP3 being purchased most likely would be popular.

Yes, I am interested in developing string rhythmic patterns. I am developing a style of play that anchors the thumb base knuckle on the banjo goatskin head while using banjo finger picks on the index and middle fingers. It allows playing 2-4 strings in a fast sequence and accentuates rhythm. Then I use the same technique with mandolin and (8 string) guitar with all instruments tuned GDAE.

Mr Quinn can also be found bodhraning along with "The Duke of flute" himself Brian Duke on Cian's "Three Shouts from a Hill" it remains a firm favourite of mine after all these years!
