Paul and Rob,

Just wondering if the topic of mic's ever came up w John Joe.

sm57 seems to be his weapon of choice for live gigs in the recent years.
far cry from the SM81/Beta 52 combo

Just curious.... is it a question of not wanting to cart around extra mics, or if they have thier own sound man, is the assumption that the 57 can be EQ'ed enough to bring out the highs and lows?

Hey Kip,

we didn't talk about mics, but he was having a helluva time getting a decent sound last Friday, he wasn't a happy bunny. It sounded poor from where we were standing at soundcheck (at the bar of course) all upper mid with fat bass and a great big hole in the middle. It didn't sound bad during the gig from 6ft away but I've heard him sound a helluva lot better.

He was using a 57 on Friday, I read here iirc that the 57 is on his spec. The guy who used the beta52 / sm81 combo (John) was a very competent engineer and seemed to know how to dial in this stuff beautifully.

I suppose like most of us, unless you carry your own engineer & mics or specify 57s and 58s we're at the mercy of whatever's in the engineer's box what and they hear between their ears.

ah... so the choice of mic's was less his choice..and more his engineer's choice.... so the 81/52 guy was a different guy then they bring along these days?

i guess since i have a mic preference, i just assumed the equipment config was his personal choice.

yep.... the flook.co.uk site requests a 57 http://www.flook.co.uk/promo/stageplan.html

although i bring my own mic, i usually just tell the soundguy to leave the bass level, notch out the mid range honk around 300, and give me a push round 4k for a bit of the pop

which SoK was he wearing? standard style, or the constrictor style?

Hi Kip-
Have posted a response over on the hacking home base thread, just for consistency's sake!

Yes they don't bring their own engineer on wee tours like this one from what I have seen but will maybe bring someone if they're away in foreign lands.

He was using his original O'Kane that was many many years old, it looks like it had received several rough coats of paint after the pub on a Friday night but sounded great :) He had been using a constrictor drum recently but something broke so it's back with Seamus.

Next time I see him I'll ask about the micing scenario

Cheers
